Stewart Hi, I have three of these tools and they are simply invaluable, the register zero point lines up when the two front edges of the fixed and sliding part are aligned - much in the same way a Dial or Vernier Nose measuring device works so when you slide the Jaw backwards the size is registered at the same time. If you think about it, vernier calipers are exactly the same, in that the readings are not coincidental with the null front face. - do yourself a favour and just buy one.
